Silawit Poolsawat (B.1972)

In contemporary Thai art, Po – Silawit Poolsawat is known as one of the painters renowned for his incomparable lively portraits and ability to stir up the emotions of viewers and fixate them upon the paintings before their very eyes as well.

Po – Silawit Poolsawat graduated from the Department of Applied Arts, the Faculty of Decorative Arts at Silpakorn University. There, he learned to create art in all techniques and fields such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, and many more. Although he likes painting the most, he also uses many other techniques to good account, especially the combination of graphic works to create dimensions in his oeuvre as well. After graduation, Silawit has chosen to walk on his own artistic path for the past several decades and built up a reputation with unique portrait works that have been widely accepted both in Thailand and in many other countries around the world. He has also exhibited his work in countless leading galleries.

If truth be told, defining his work as a portrait may not be entirely correct because the artist actually does not want to paint people as realistic as we see them. Rather, he wants to stretch the imagination that exists within the mind and emotion into the work more. Those depicted in his paintings are all unknown individuals. It could be a girl he imagined from a novel he had read or a favorite Chinese movie he had watched. She would, for instance, look like an Asian woman with a beautiful face and many intriguing personalities full of feelings that mingle with each other. She would be both sweet and gentle but interspersed with strength, prudence, and determination that can be seen from her facial expressions, eyes, and gestures. Over and above that, his paintings also reflect the passing of time, allowing us to see the traces of day and night, the morning sun, or even the gloom of the night. He makes us see impressive images both the eyes can see and the heart can touch to the point that they have become the conclusion of the perfect beauty in the style of Silawit Poolsawat, a highly skilled contemporary artist.
